Novocel’s proprietary stack technology is at the heart of our fuel cell systems. Fuel cell integrators incorporate our stacks into fuel cell systems in use across China.
Benefits of Novocel Water-Cooled Stacks
Novocel’s state of the art fuel cell system is the result of the accumulated efforts of specialists working over four years. The system is the most advanced in China, and also the recipient of two invention patents. The Novocel fuel cell stack and flow management system is a compact collection of hydrogen, oxygen, and cooling routes which taken together form the core of the power-train systems.
Fuel Cell Hydrogen Management Technology
The Novocel FCV power-train solution is based on the principle of using a hybrid combination of fuel cell and lithium battery to capitalize on the higher energy density of hydrogen and methanol to create a power-train system that can compete with traditional engines on range, emissions, price, and power. Our solution is divided into two modules to best fit the spatial needs determined by the vehicle. For passenger vehicles, a hydrogen tank stores several kilograms of hydrogen fuel; for larger vehicles (i.e., trucks and buses), an onboard reformer module reforms a methanol-water mix into hydrogen on-demand; the fuel cell (FC) power module uses hydrogen to produce electricity.

Costs per Cubic Meter of Four Types of Hydrogen Sources | Capital Investment (RMB) for 5m3/hr hydrogen production | Operating Costs | Footprint (square meters) | Pressurization | Cost to obtain one cubic meter of hydrogen (RMB / m3H2) |
Novocel HyGen 5000 (with fuel) | 60,000 | N/A | 5 | No | RMB 1.7 |
Ammonia cracking + purification | 60,000 | 15kW | 80 | Yes | RMB 3.25 (1.75 for ammonia + 1.5 for electricity) |
Water Electrolysis | 60,000 | 100kW | 60 | Yes | RMB 5 |
Bottled Hydrogen (T-Cylinder) | 60,000 | N/A | 20 | Yes | RMB 8 |
? In the above diagram the capital costs of various hydrogen production machinery are the same, but the operating costs differ greatly. Though both bottled hydrogen & reformed hydrogen (from the Novocel HyGen 5000) have low operating costs they nevertheless do have fuel costs. Methanol costs much less than compressed hydrogen as measured per unit of hydrogen; this discrepancy is reflected in the final cost – the far right column.
? Unlike other hydrogen production technologies, the HyGen 5000 does not require high operating pressures, making the system less likely to leak and, as a consequence, safer to operate.
Finally, the HyGen 5000 is also much smaller, making the equipment easy to site and install.
